Gitaru Self-Help Water Project is community based organization (CBO) located within Gitaru Ward, Kabete Sub County, Kiambu County and 18 Kilometers from Nairobi the Capital City. The Northern corridor Road (A104) transverses through this area while the Western and Southern by passes connects here. The project was started in 1968 with a primary objective of tackling rampant problem of lack of clean, quality water to the inhabitants.
Gitaru self-help project was formed and registered in December 1964 when Nderi and part of Kikuyu area were part of Gitaru sub location. Due to lack of technical human resource the project was mainly controlled and managed from Muguga (kwa High).In 1965 clean water was still a challenge especially to residents of Gitaru, Muthure and Kanyariri.
